10 people that prove we need to stop obsessing over selfies
I also take Selfies!
However! I honestly believe some people are becoming way too obsessed with producing a perfect selfie.
We go through all the motions:
- Getting the perfect balance between a pout and looking like Daffy/ Donald duck (I know you men do it too!).
- Making sure we get the obligatory toilet trip snaps.
- Squinting our eyes to look alluring (but actually looking a little Chinese).
Even if you don't take them, you get affected by them!
For many (unless it is just the Brits), it becomes the norm convincing people that yes, you do look pretty. No, your butt doesn't look big. No, your face isn't shiny. He most definitely liked the picture because he wants you.
Eurgh...
It has become part of our culture now as a whole.
It has become something we obsess over.
I thought I was being pranked when I saw this but...
(Okay, 12 deaths by selfies and 8 deaths by sharks in 2015 isn't a huge difference...but still)
Because everyone wants a selfie to die for...right?
Now, I'm not saying it was the Selfie fault the person died. However, it is apparent that Selfies can take attention away from us. (Just shout "Selfie" when in a group and you'll see what I mean!).
It's like a preview of whats to come...
Without further ado, here are 10 Selfies that definitely didn't go as planned (#Nailedit...?) :
1. Put your phone away!
A woman from North Carolina got inspired from the song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams and decided it was the perfect time to take a selfie and upload it.
Problem was, she was driving.
She crashed into a truck and lost her life.
2. Did I put the safety on...
A 21 year old gun enthusiast from Mexico decided it was time to change his profile picture. So he decided to try posing with a gun, borrowed from a friend, pointed to his head. They had all been having a few drinks beforehand, and they believed the gun was empty. What could possibly go wrong right?
He accidentally triggered the gun, accidentally killing himself.
3. Wham...
Two Iranian women were having a karaoke session to liven up a car ride. It was decided they would take a selfie and record their fun. However, the attention required for the selfie took the attention required for watching the road.
Both women survived.
They took another selfie in the ambulance they were took to the hospital in.
4. Look how cool I am...
A 17 year old Russian photography student wanted to impress her friends by climbing on a bride 28 foot off the ground to take a selfie.
She lost her balance and tried to grab onto a wire to steady herself. Unfortunately it was a live wire.
5. Near Miss...
A man decided to take a selfie whilst off-roading in his Jeep. However, he wasn't content and decided to incorporate his "Selfie Stick" to get a picture of the whole Jeep. This man failed to notice the fact the car in front had slowed down with a canoe being strapped to the top.
It was a near miss as the canoe narrowly missed his head.
6. The Bull Run...
David Gonzales Lopez from Spain decided to attend the annual bull running festival in the town of Villaseca de la Sagrayy. This event consists of having a herd of bulls chase a crowd of people (Logic...anyone...?) He had decided not to participate in the event, and instead decided to photograph the event. As the bulls appeared to be distracted, David took his chance to step out of the protected area to get a selfie with the bull in the background.
Unfortunately, he did not notice the other bull charging at him.
He initially died when the horn pierced his neck, however suffered multiple other wounds.
(Warning - Whilst there are videos online of this attack, it is disturbing. Watch at your own discretion)
7. Out with a bang...
Two cousins from Texas found what they believed to be an unloaded gun and had taken it home with them. One boy, whilst alone in the bathroom, proceeded to take pictures holding this gun in various poses and uploading them to websites. Whilst holding it against his upper body, the gun discharged.
The young boy died instantly.
8. Trouble in Paradise...
A polish couple decided to go on holiday to Portugal with their two young children aged 5 and 6. In their attempt to take a selfie on a cliff in Cabo da Roca, they decided to cross the safety barrier. They left their children on the safe side of the barrier as it was safer.
The Children watched in horror as the parents slipped and fell into the water.
9. Don't play with guns...
Two teenage boys from Faisalabad (Pakistan) were joking around with toy guns making comedic photos with plans to upload on social media. One pose was of one boy pointing the gun at the other. However, a policeman walked past and shot at the boys without warning (presumably under the impression they were real guns).
The policeman fled the scene upon realisation of his error.
One boy died whilst the other severely wounded.
10. Dying for that perfect shot...
A 19 year old and her classmate had gone to the roof deck of a 20 storey building in order to get some fun selfies with the sunset in the background. After taking a few selfies, the young girl decided she wanted to go closer to the raised section of the wall. After a few more snaps, her classmate stopped to review the selfies they had taken. The classmate stated that they heard her say "I'm climbing the wall, take my picture".
Her classmate turned around only to see her already falling to her death.
This Happened January 2016...Already.
Although it may seem extreme, maybe the Russians have it right...
When you take a selfie, please make sure your attention is in the right place!

DeleteI guess I'm out of the loop! I haven't heard of any of this and I can't imagine a toilet trip selfie. Funny the lengths some people will go to.
